Agriculture In The Classroom
Agriculture in the Classroom is a grassroots program coordinated by the United States Department of Agriculture. Its goal is to help students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture in the economy and society, so that they may become citizens who support wise agricultural policies.
The program is carried out in each state, according to state needs and interests, by individuals representing farm organizations, agribusiness, education and government.
The USDA supports the state organizations by:
helping to develop Agriculture in the Classroom programs
acting as a central clearinghouse for materials and information
encouraging USDA agencies to assist in the state programs, and
coordinating with national organizations to promote the goal of an increased awareness of agriculture among the nation's students.

Garden Harvest Inc. , Reisterstown , MD
Garden Harvest, Inc. is a not-for-profit farm run by full time volunteers, assisted by seasonal staff & apprentices, and supported by over 5000 enthusiastic volunteers each season.
Our mission is the alleviation of hunger & the improvement of nutrition of economically disadvantaged citizens worldwide. We accomplish this by the establishment of community farms that teach people of all ages & any ethnic background methods of organic, sustainable production of fruit, vegetables, eggs, & wool , and in the near future milk & cheese, so they can learn how to grow food for themselves & for others, and in ways that regenerate the Earth's precious soil. All crops produced at Garden Harvest farms are given to the poor.
We assist economically distressed individuals from the rural area of Appalachia in the establishment of their own farms. We do this by training them in animal husbandry and then giving them livestock to take back to their homes where they can implement what they've learned to produce their own food & bring in some income.

The Sheep and Goat Marketing Program is intended to build capacity to supply the growing consumer demand for high quality sheep and goat meat. It was originally called The "Northeast" Sheep and Goat Marketing Program and had this goal in mind for the Northeastern states. Due to it's success and the importance of the goal, we are now expanding the program geographically. The program had developed from a grant received by Cornell University from the USDA to improve sheep and goat marketing infrastructure in the Northeast. Funds for the grant were made available to the industry as a result of the successful petition by the American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) et al to slow the flow of imported sheep products into the United States. Funds from the resulting short term tariff imposition on imported sheep meats are being recycled into the industry to improve its competitive position. website: http://www.sheepgoatmarketing.info email: sschoen@umd.edu phone: (301)432-2767 x-343
